The city centre of Berlin comprises the city districts of the historical Berlin/Coelln. The city parts of Berlin Mitte and Tiergarten are the locations of all the important institutions from parliament to government, on to almost all of the embassies.

The city district "Berlin Mitte" comprises the area of the old Berlin. The walls of the fortress were already removed centuries ago. The borders of Old Berlin are seen in the names of streets and squares. For instance the Gate "Brandenburger Tor" was the customs duty gate in the Western direction to the city of Brandenburg.
